Thank you to our organizational partners for children’s activities!

The Avian Conservation Center for Appalachia (ACCAWV) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located near Morgantown, WV. Their mission is to conserve the region’s wild birds through research, education, and rehabilitation. They are licensed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service to treat and rehabilitate injured, ill, or orphaned wild birds, including raptors, eagles, songbirds, waterbirds, waterfowl, and sea birds.
The ACCAWV is also licensed to possess non-releasable birds for educational purposes, and sponsors the West Virginia Young Birders Club. Every injured bird that comes through their door receives a comprehensive examination by a veterinarian and are then nursed back to health by our caring staff and volunteers. If you find an injured wild bird, please contact the ACCAWV! They work with the veterinarians at Cheat Lake Animal Hospital in Morgantown; the hospital is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Since the formation of Friends of the Cheat (FOC) in 1994, the organization’s primary focus has been addressing the severe acid mine drainage (AMD) pollution issues in the lower reaches of the Cheat River watershed.
Through coalition building, collaboration, and the implementation of AMD treatment systems, the Cheat River – named one of the country’s most endangered rivers in 1995 – is once again alive with life.
